Black Gold was a massive learning experience for me. I primarily had dark shapes against a gold background. First a textured ground was placed and then variations of yellow, orange and red were rubbed into the ground creating a dark glow. Just the reverse of watercolor, I began painting dark to light. Since I am a loose painter, I painted out of the lines to get the brush work the way I want it on the cattle. There was so much straw. When I tightened around the edges with the lighter color this overlapping and irregularity seemed to enhance everything. To paint the large grasses in the foreground , I had more control when turning the painting sideways. Up near the horizon I left some of the ground exposed and it made an interesting transition.
